Bear Island Light, in Mount Desert Island, Maine one late October afternoon I chartered the yacht “Asticou” and took along my friend Wally for the ride. We toured the Cranberry Islands and nearby Bass Harbor Head Light. As we made our way back the vessel slowed down to a crawl. We could see in the distance Bear Island Light perched precipitously on a cliff overlooking Northeast Harbor and the other Cranberry Islands. Bear Island Light is a private residence and not open to the public, even though it is located in Acadia National Park. But, the best views are from the water anyway. I asked Captain Rick to shut the engines off and the only sound was the water clapping on the side of vessel. The evening sun intensified the colors and gloriously revealed more characteristics of the lighthouse and surrounding hills. Captain Rick pointed out that Mount Cadillac was the tallest mountain along the eastern coast of the United States. “You won’t see a sight like this anywhere else,” said the captain…and he was right.
